Alan Moore and Stephen O’Malley: Simultaneous conjugation of four spirits in a room: 2010 23 01 2010 For the opening of the exhibition Turner versus Martin at the Laing Art Gallery, AV Festival 10 brings together two great forces in contemporary culture, the graphic novelist Alan Moore (V for Vendetta, Watchmen), and musician Stephen O’Malley (Sunn O))), KTL, Gravetemple). Alan Moore will write and perform a new text responding to the energy of the two paintings: John Martin’s infamous The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (1852) and a key painting by JMW Turner from the Tate Collection. Stephen O’Malley will create a new ambient soundscape, sonically melting in the radiance of the paintings. 14 mars 2010, 20:00 08:00 PM - ENGLISH JOURNEY REVISITED: IAIN SINCLAIR AND ALAN MOORE @ The Sage
St Mary’s Sq, Gateshead Quays,, Gateshead, Northeast NE8 2JR -

ENGLISH JOURNEY REVISITED: IAIN SINCLAIR AND ALAN MOORE with FM EINHEIT, STEPHEN O’MALLEY, SUSAN STENGER AND GRAHAM DOLHIN The Sage Gateshead, Sun 14th March, 8:00pm In 1933, during the Great Depression, JB Priestley travelled from London to the North East to write his legendary book English Journey. His social commentary influenced the thoughts of an entire generation, inspiring George Orwell and informing both the creation of the welfare state and the birth of CND. Over 75 years since its publication, in a new era of recession, AV Festival 10 brings together leading writers and musicians to perform moments from a contemporary journey, offering new social observations and predictions of the future. Iain Sinclair is one of Britain’s most original writers and filmmakers. Since the 1960s his work has presented a new vision of the modern city. His seminal work London Orbital was based on a walk around the M25. Alan Moore is a British writer most famous for his powerful work in graphic novels including the acclaimed series Watchmen, V for Vendetta and From Hell. The performance is underscored by a specially commissioned soundscape performed by musicians: FM Einheit (from influential 1980s German band Einstürzende Neubauten), Stephen O’Malley (founder of leading drone doom bands Sunn O))), KTL, Gravetemple) and Susan Stenger (leading performer of music by John Cage and Christian Wolff and co-founder of Band of Susans, The Brood, Big Bottom). It also features a new projected moving image work by Iain Sinclair and artist Graham Dolphin, which follows their residency at the Northern Region Film and Television Archive. Just as Priestley’s travels across Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and Middlesbrough marked the northern ending point of his journey, this performance marks the dramatic end of AV Festival 10. http://www.avfestival.co.uk/programme/10/highlights/closing-night-performance www.thesagegateshead.org
