December, 2 2009 09:00 PM - David ALLAN Coe w/Joecephus and the George Jonestown Massacre
Valarium, Knoxville, Tennessee 37902 - $20 Advance/$22 Doors, Plus Applicable Service Fees

A life-long renegade, singer/songwriter David Allan Coe was one of the most colorful and unpredictable characters in country music history. One of the pioneering artists of the outlaw country movement of the ’70s, he didn’t have many big hits -- only three of his singles hit the Top Ten -- but he was among the biggest cult figures in country music throughout his career. If there’s ever been a way to describe DAC, it has got to be his ability to defy categorization. With nearly three decades of following his musical muse wherever it’s led, this outlaw has crossed the panorama of American roots music. In 1978, Johnny Paycheck had a No. 1 country hit with Coe’s "Take This Job and Shove It," which inspired a film of the same title in 1981. Coe’s own successes included the witty "Divers Do it Deeper" (1978), "Jack Daniels if You Please" (1979), "Now I Lay Me Down to Cheat" (1982) and "The Ride" (1983’s song which conjures up a meeting between Coe and Hank Williams). In 1984, Coe reached No. 2 on the country charts with "Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile" to mark his highest chart position as a performer. His devotion to the fans, and the music, has created a spiral that now has its own momentum. At David’s shows there’s a chemical reaction that transforms the songs when the audience is in the house. Come see this American country legend at the Valarium!

December, 4 2009 09:00 PM - Switchfoot
The Orange Peel, Asheville, North Carolina 40202 - $20.00 Advance / $22.00 Door

With Hello Hurricane, Switchfoot is set to thrive in 2009 with a newfound independence: a new home studio HQ, a new label, and a return-to-roots creativity and sense of purpose. After ten non-stop years of working as the world’s most humble multi-million selling rock band, the hard-charging North County San Diego-based quintet saw recording sessions for their aptly-titled seventh full-length album as a unique chance to reassess, reflect and rededicate. “For the last decade or so, we’ve been a rock band that really thrives off that interaction with the crowd,” states Butler. “Our motivation for playing music in the first place was a desire to connect with people in a deeper way.” Out of this connection the band’s renowned live show has developed an incredibly loyal following both here in the states and abroad. December, 5 2009 08:00 PM - Delbert McClinton - Shiner Bock Rocks The Bijou w/Brendon James Wright
The US Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre, Knoxville, Tennessee 37902 - $33.00, Plus applicable service fees

The venerable Delbert McClinton is a legend among Texas roots music aficionados, not only for his amazing longevity, but for his ability to combine country, blues, soul, and rock & roll as if there were no distinctions between any of them in the best time-honored Texas tradition. A formidable harmonica player long before he recorded as a singer, McClinton’s career began in the late ’50s, yet it took him nearly two decades to evolve into a bona fide solo artist. A critics’ darling and favorite of his peers, McClinton never really became a household name, but his resurgence in the ’90s helped him earn more widespread respect from both the public at large and the Grammy committee. His newest release, "Acquired Taste" is his thirteenth studio album and the first new studio recording by McClinton in over four years. McClinton doesn t change the musical formula on Acquired Taste, (a juke joint blend of country, blues, soul and rock n roll). This time, the subtle change from his last album, 2005 s Cost Of Living, are the reflective lyrics providing one of the wisest and most introspective albums of his 50 year musical career. December, 5 2009 09:00 PM - Pelican w/Black Cobra and Disappearer
The Orange Peel, Asheville, North Carolina - $12 advance/ $14 door plus applicable service fees

The secretive instrumental art metal outfit Pelican was formed in Chicago by guitarists Trevor de Brauw and Laurent Lebec, with bassist Larry Herweg and his sibling drummer, Bryan. Owing a great debt to pioneering forefathers Neurosis and often compared to Boston’s nearly as influential Isis (minus the vocals, naturally), Pelican coincidentally also found a home at Isis mastermind Aaron Turner’s Hydra Head Records. After making their debut with an eponymous four-song EP in 2003, Pelican expanded their epic, otherworldly trance-metal to continent-sized movements with 2003’s critically acclaimed Australasia album and followed it with 2004’s The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw. After nonstop touring, playing in clubs, small halls, and mammoth festivals, the quartet took a much-deserved break. They returned to the studio in 2006 and released City of Echoes in June 2007, followed by the live CD/DVD After the Ceiling Cracked later that December. December, 7 2009 09:00 PM - Strange Design (Phish Tribute)
The Orange Peel, Asheville, North Carolina 40202 - $10 advance/ $12 door

A new study released this week has revealed that plenty of Phish is a necessary part of a well-balanced musical diet. This should come as little surprise, as the Vermont-based foursome is protein-packed and easily-digestible, providing listeners with their much-needed aural nutrients. With the demand vastly outnumbering the supply, many fans are simply not meeting their Phish needs. For those in desperate need of a hearty supplement, Strange Design offers fans an opportunity to hear their favorite shows performed live in their entirety. Much like the way in which Dark Star Orchestra performs sets from the expansive Grateful Dead catalogue, Strange Design performs entire shows from the first twenty years of Phish’s career. This approach has helped set them apart from other Phish tribute acts and garnered them critical praise: "This is not a band that plays its fourteen favorite Phish covers -- they study and re-enact full concerts from an era when the band was the most dynamic force in live improvisational music...This is a band that makes it alright to admit you were a Phish die-hard, and will probably leave you recounting your favorite tour stories to complete strangers after the encore..." (Nick Levy, The Brooklyn Revue). Strange Design strives to reconnect the dispersed Phish community by taking show requests from fans, including all the extra-musical components that made Phish unique (trampolines, vacuum solos, choreographed dances, etc), traveling with a full light show, and recreating the energy, sound, and improvisational spirit of the different eras in Phish’s career. Tickets on sale October 30th!

December, 12 2009 09:00 PM - Brendan Benson w/Cory Chisel
Exit In, Nashville, Tennessee - $16.00 Advance and $16.00 Doors plus applicable service fees

Benson’s voice has a gleam to it, a West Coast shimmer, the shine of a sleek new fender. When I hear Brendan Benson sing I think of the furl on a Coca Cola bottle, of broad Midwestern skies and bright yellow mustard. It was there in the biography of course: a lifetime spread across four states, from a childhood spent on the outskirts of New Orleans, to his years in Detroit, Michigan, sojourns in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and a more recent relocation to Nashville, Tennessee. Benson’s musical approach is detailed, craftsmanlike, fastidious. On 1996’s One Mississippi, the songs came rough-hewn but charged with hooks and with wit; 2002’s Lapalco brought a perfect pop ripeness, and by The Alternative to Love in 2005, there was something quite brilliant, quite burnished about his songwriting. Along the way he has co-written and recorded two spectacular albums with the Raconteurs, Broken Boy Soldiers and Consolers of the Lonely. For Benson, The Raconteurs was not just an opportunity to play with close friends Jack White (The White Stripes) Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler (The Greenhornes) but also an chance to roll around in the rock, psychedelia and blues that had shaped his musical taste. December, 12 2009 09:00 PM - Ghostland Observatory
Neighborhood Theatre, Charlotte, North Carolina 28205 - $22.00 Advance/ $24.00 Doors/ $35.00 VIP Mezz, Plus applicable service fees

Ghostland Observatory is not a band, but an agreement between two friends to create something that not only heals their beat-driven hearts, but pleases their rock ‘n roll souls. Formed in Austin in 2004, the duo of front man Aaron Behrens and producer/drummer Thomas Turner mash together electro, rock, and funk. Behrens’ vocal style and stage performances are unique and uncompromising are often compared to Freddie Mercury and Prince. Turner is heavily influenced by electronic artists such as Daft Punk, Laurent Garnier and Green Velvet, as well as rockers such as The Animals, David Bowie, and The Clash. With their spectral blend of electronics, drums, guitar and vocals, they have emerged with a sound that is the culmination of past influence and present inspiration and is entirely their own.

Son of Frank Zappa and a heavy metal disciple of Eddie Van Halen and Steve Vai, Dweezil released his first album, Havin’ a Bad Day, in 1986. He worked a stint as a VJ on MTV, appeared in the films Pretty in Pink and The Running Man, and had a brief sojourn in TV situation comedy with his sister Moon Unit, on 1988-1989’s Normal Life. After diving into TV soundtrack composition and guitar-for-hire on various studio sessions, Dweezil re-dedicated himself to learning guitar, changing his style a bit and adopting many of his father’s picking techniques. In 2005, he assembled a crack band of younger players and recruited FZ alumni Steve Vai, Terry Bozzio, and Napoleon Murphy Brock for the critically acclaimed Zappa Plays Zappa tour which hit the road in the summer of 2006. The band performed an entire program of Frank Zappa compositions with Vai and Bozzio appearing as guests and Dweezil himself as lead guitarist/bandleader. Between legs of that tour, he released Go with What You Know, easily his most ambitious album to date. A studio version and DVD of Zappa Plays Zappa appeared in 2008. January, 19 2010 09:00 PM - RJD2 w/Happy Chichester
Valarium, Knoxville, Tennessee 37902 - $15 advance/ $17 door

On his breakout solo debut, Deadringer, Rjd2 sent listeners on a musical foray into instrumentalism, feasting on styles both old and new, and in the process creating a sound that’s emerging as one of the most interesting and exciting new voices in instrumental music. In a genre filled with ambient spacemen and droning techno fromage, Rjd2 brought a sense of song structure and vitality that was sorely missing, harkening back to a time when instrumental groups like Booker T. and the MGs got radio play (no joke). And the accolades rolled in. From industry luminaries like Chris Blackwell, to members of Radiohead and The Strokes, to ?uestlove of The Roots (who nominated Dead Ringer for the prestigious Short List awards in 2003), to DJ Shadow, Rj soon became a favorite of those in-the-know. Dead Ringer was an incredible success globally, appearing on many a year-end list, including Spin’s Top 40 Albums of 2002. In ’03, he followed up the success of his debut with The Horror, an EP of B-sides that played closer to an entirely new album than a collection of leftovers, and cemented Rjd2 as one of music’s most talked about new artists. January, 21 2010 09:00 PM - Corey Smith
Valarium, Knoxville, Tennessee 37902 - $18.00 Advance/ $20.00 Doors / $10.00 Fan Club

Corey Smith melds country, rock and blues into a sound that is all his own. That distinctive musical flair combined with Smith’s pensive lyrics and soulful Southern voice has earned him an enthusiastic legion of fans. His release, Undertones, birthed the college anthem “Twenty-One,” evoking full-blown sing-alongs accompanied by fans waving in time with the acoustic melody. “I’m Not Gonna’ Cry” struck a soft-spot with high school graduates across the country; in 2007, more than 200 schools chose the single as their graduation anthem. Although Smith’s popular tracks like “If I Could Do It Again” and “Carolina” contain the nostalgic, booze-laden imagery characteristic of much of Smith’s writing, the album as a whole resonates with a familial pride and sense of fulfillment that is refreshingly new. Musical diversity is evident on his newest project, Hard-Headed Fool, which showcases a confident young artist in full command of his gift. For Smith, it’s just about writing songs that connect with people and impact their lives. Tickets on sale Nov 13th: knoxvilletickets.com

Yonder’s sound cannot be classified purely as “bluegrass” or “string music” but rather it’s an original sound created from “looking at music from [their] own experiences and doing the best job possible.” "The Show" is the second album with rock producer Tom Rothrock (Beck, Elliott Smith, Foo Fighters). While some might scratch their heads as to why a string band would want a rock producer, this decision was a natural choice for the band. The Show is the band’s most varied and versatile album to date. It’s bluegrass for the masses, acoustic tunes filled with dazzling chops, and it’s fun to boot. A regular at bluegrass festivals like the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and the band’s own Northwest String Summit as well as massive multi-stage events like Bonnaroo and Rothbury. Fans are no doubt drawn to Yonder’s anything goes attitude, its humor and passion about music, and the band’s ability to stretch out live. "Everyone appreciates good music. Some people want to go to a recital and some people want to party." Tickets on sale Nov 13th: http://tinyurl.com/lr7oqs Yonder Mountain String Band will be at The Orange Peel for two nights on February 3-4! You can buy a one night ticket for $25 or a two night ticket for $45.

Between the Buried and Me is a thinking man’s hardcore unit hailing from Raleigh, NC and have once again charted an expedition into undiscovered country. Colors, BTBAM’s fifth and newest release, is a continuous, sonic labyrinth of savage metal, lush prog-rock and uninhibited emotion. “It’s the ultimate Between the Buried and Me record,” says vocalist Tommy Rogers. “It’s definitely the most musical thing we have ever written. It goes through so many shifts and moods but still feels very organic and comfortable.” After rising from the ashes of some of North Carolina’s most well-known hardcore/metalcore bands, such as From Here On, Prayer for Cleansing and Azazel, Between the Buried and Me has developed its own sound to become one of the most technical and brutal bands to come out of NC. The Orange Peel, Asheville, North Carolina 40202 - $20.00 Advance/ $22.00 Doors ($1.00 Charity Fee added on top of ticket price)

Brandi Carlile’s third album, Give Up The Ghost, unveils her talents in their truest form. After two albums and non-stop touring, she has let her guard down and offers her most candid recording to date. If the phrase "give up the ghost" most often refers to death or dying, it can also be used to describe the passing of stages in life, of transformation. "To give up the ghost is not just to die since we do it a handful of times throughout our lives. It’s a sort of leaving yourself behind," she explains. "Or what you knew yourself to be so that you can grow and transcend love or youth. Sometimes both." Several of Carlile’s songs have appeared in commercials and on televisions shows such as Grey’s Anatomy. Along the way, she has toured with the likes of Ray LaMontagne, and Sheryl Crow, who raved about Carlile’s support performances online: "She has the most amazing voice I may have ever heard. Soulful. Country. Perfect in every way-and propelled by taste." We couldn’t agree more. Tickets on sale Nov 6th: http://tinyurl.com/lr7oqs Amy Ray’s Rock Show opens.

February, 14 2010 08:00 PM - Drive-By Truckers
U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre, Knoxville, Tennessee 37902 - $25.00, plus applicable service fees

Flaunting a mix of Southern pride, erudite lyrics, and a muscled three-guitar attack, Drive-By Truckers became one of the most well-respected alternative country-rock acts of the 2000s. Led by frontman, Patterson Hood, and comprising a rotating cast of Georgia and Alabama natives, the band celebrates the South while refusing to paint over its spotty past. History, Southern folklore, politics, and character studies all share equal space in the Truckers catalog. However, it was the band’s ambitious double-disc concept album, The Southern Rock Opera, that became their unlikely magnum opus. A two-act affair, the album explored Patterson Hood’s fascination with 1970s Southern rock (specifically Lynyrd Skynyrd) while tackling the cultural contradictions of the South. The band’s newest CD is The Fine Print - a collection of oddities and rarities, which features songs written by band members past and present. Tickets on sale December 4: knoxvilletickets.com

February, 18 2010 09:00 PM - Dark Star Orchestra
The Orange Peel, Asheville, North Carolina 40202 - $22.00 Advance / $24.00 Door

It’s really about the sound that’s created. It’s about a sense of familiarity. It’s about a feeling that grabs listeners and takes over. It’s about a contagious energy: it’s about the experience. Dark Star Orchestra has been delivering this experience to old and new Grateful Dead fans for 10 years, after guitarist John Kadlecik contacted keyboardist Scott Larned with a concept -- performing complete Grateful Dead shows out of history. When Scott mentioned having the same idea, John knew they were on to something. The Washington Post declared them “the hottest Grateful Dead tribute act going”; USA Today claimed DSO was “channeling the Dead,” but what they do is not just a tribute to the Grateful Dead but a testament to the enormous number of unique set lists they performed in their long career. They have grown continually, playing at larger venues and theaters, collaborating with guests including Grateful Dead alumni Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, Donna Jean Godchaux-Mackay, Vince Welnick, and Tom Constanten. The timeless music of the Grateful Dead has no age boundaries as fans at DSO shows range in age from teenager to post-baby boomer. Tickets on sale November 20th: http://tinyurl.com/lr7oqs

February, 20 2010 09:00 PM - North Mississippi Allstars
The Orange Peel, Asheville, North Carolina 40202 - $16 advance/ $18 door

Brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson soaked up the music of their father, Jim Dickinson, and absorbed the North Mississippi Blues legacy while playing and shaking it down at the juke joints with their blues ancestors. Luther (guitar and vocals) and Cody (drums and vocals) joined up with bassist Chris Chew to form the core of their own band, The North Mississippi Allstars. Through the filter of generations of Mississippi Blues men, the Allstars pioneered their own blues-infused rock and roll. The band released Hernando in early 2008, which represented a return to the blues-rock roots the band started with more than a decade ago. It was also the first release on the trio’s own label, Songs of the South Records. The band recently finished their retrospective record (set for release on January 20, 2009) entitled ‘Do It Like We Used To Do’. The 2 CD/1 DVD package features two discs of music that chronologically highlight the band’s live performances over their first twelve years together, and also includes a full-length documentary DVD on the history of the band. The documentary captures rare live footage, interviews with the guys, and tells the story of a classic American band. Tickets on sale Nov 13th: http://tinyurl.com/lr7oqs

A typical show consists of Rollins reporting his thoughts on what he has been seeing and feeling—and like his other work, he does not shy away from expressing the pain and frustration he feels living in today’s world. "The Henry Rollins Show", on the Independent Film Channel, turned out to be a real gem, with Rollins critiquing music and pop culture as well as hosting film actors, directors, and others. March, 20 2010 09:00 PM - David ALLAN Coe
The Orange Peel, Asheville, North Carolina 28801 - $20 Advance/$22 Doors, Plus Applicable Service Fees

Come see this American country legend at The Orange Peel!
