January, 30 2010 08:00 PM - The China Cats (Grateful Dead Tribute)
, , 00000 - $14-17

Grateful Dead tribute bands are a dime a dozen, rarely capturing any of the Dead’s actual appeal or virtuosic jamming, but The China Cats actually do the legacy proud. What became a one-off tribute last year among self-professed Deadheads has grown into a primary concern, and for good reason: instead of trying to attempt note-for-note re-enactments, The China Cats evoke the spirit of the Dead through limber jams potent enough to give even the sober a contact high.

April, 8 2010 08:00 PM - Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas
, , 00000 - $19-22

The musical partnership between Alasdair Fraser, long regarded as Scotland’s premier fiddle ambassador, and the sizzlingly-talented young California cellist Natalie Haas may not seem an obvious one. Fraser, acclaimed by the San Francisco Examiner as “the Michael Jordan of Scottish fiddling,” has a concert and recording career spanning 30 years, with a long list of awards, accolades, television credits, and feature performances on top movie soundtracks (Last of the Mohicans, Titanic). Natalie Haas, a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, wasn’t even born when Alasdair was winning national fiddle competitions on the other side of the Atlantic. But this seemingly unlikely pairing is the fulfillment of a long-standing musical dream for Fraser, whose cutting-edge musical explorations took him full circle to find a cellist who could help him return the cello to its historical role at the rhythmic heart of Scottish dance music.

April, 17 2010 08:00 PM - Cliff Wagner & The Old Number 7
, , 00000 - $12-15

Cliff Wagner & The Old Number 7 has played all over Southern California, Nevada, and Arizona at bluegrass festivals such as Huck Finn and Summergrass. If Bill Monroe had started a band with Muddy Waters and Levon Helm, this is what it would sound like. In the fall of 2008, Cliff submitted a video of the band to the producers of "American Idol" as an audition for a new show they were starting called "The Next Great American Band." The Old 7 was chosen out of 8,000 bands to appear with the top 12 bands, as the 7th runner up on the show. The show’s panel of judges enjoyed the band’s musicianship, but insisted that a "bluegrass" band would not be accepted by the general public and be voted off immediately. To everyone’s surprise Cliff Wagner & The Old 7 was on the show for six weeks playing for over 10 million people every week. Which just goes to show you that after over 20 years of performing, with just a couple of months the television exposure, Cliff Wagner & The Old 7 has gone from "industry secret" to "national act!" Cliff and the band are working on becoming "Overnight Sensations!!!"

September, 18 2010 08:00 PM - Ruby Dee and the Snakehandlers
, , 00000 - $12-15

Ruby Dee and the Snakehandlers are a 7-year-old four-piece combo that plays an Americana brimming over with the sounds of Texas honky-tonk, Bakersfield twang, Memphis rockabilly, Western swing and good old-fashioned rock ’n’ roll. “Risky — and perhaps just a bit risqué — Ruby Dee and The Snakehandlers conjure forth all sorts of visions of another time,” said Metro Santa Cruz after a California show. “Rooted firmly in the classic country and rockabilly tradition, the band is an authentic backdrop for lead singer Ruby Dee’s blend of Wanda Jackson sass and Patsy Cline pathos. The band holds it down with the insistence of a chugging train while Dee, a pinup heartbreaker of yesteryear with thoroughly modern attitude, commands the stage.”
