In early 2008, after several years spent in Washington D.C. bands like Q And Not U and Georgie James, John Davis decided he was ready to go out and start writing and recording albums on his own. John began work on the songs that were to become the first Title Tracks album in January 2008, as the unhappy fate of Georgie James became clear. By the time that Georgie James officially split up in the summer of 2008, John had an album’s worth of songs ready to go and began playing shows with a new group behind him by the end of that summer. “It Was Easy” is the debut full-length from Title Tracks, John’s solo project. It contains nine original songs and two covers (Bruce Springsteen’s “Tougher Than The Rest” and The Byrds’ “She Don’t Care About Time”). The originals run the spectrum from the taut, angry “Every Little Bit Hurts,” “Found Out” (both of which, in different recordings, were released as a single on Dischord Records in April 2009) and “Piles Of Paper” to the sunnier “Hello There” and “Steady Love” to the melancholy “At Fifteen,” “No, Girl” and the title track. Edwards and Fry formed Margot in 2004, originally telling journalists that they had met in a pet store, but which they now admit is untrue. Now 24, Edwards had been writing songs since the age of 13. Eventually he began to play acoustic shows, but, due to strict Indiana liquor laws, had to wait outside the club until it was his turn to go on. Fry caught a few of those early shows. “I hadn’t heard anyone with a voice like his who could write songs like that,” he says of Edwards. The two became fast friends, bonding over a love of the Beatles and their shared musical ambitions. “Here was somebody who was going to take playing music seriously,” Edwards says of Fry. “Andy was one of the first people I met who felt the same about it that I did." For the band, the result of their labors is Animal! — a genre-defying blend of lilting melodies, grinding guitars, sweeping strings, and frenetic percussive elements, topped off by Edwards’ expressive, yet often apprehensive croon. The songs, initially written by Edwards, swell into noisy mini pop-operas once filtered through Margot’s collectively skewed sensibility. “With eight people, there’s a lot of possibility for noise-making,” Fry observes. Dance music with too many cooks in the kitchen, but in a good way, so not too many cooks, maybe just an above average amount of cooks. Born in Seattle in 1998 at the tender age of intent, Unwed Sailor is helmed by Oklahoma-born songwriter Johnathon Ford. The basis for the instrumental project came into being while Ford was still writing with Seattle luminaries Roadside Monument. Pulling towards a bass guitar-oriented sound, the songs he had begun to craft did not fully feel right for Roadside Monument, thus the unbeknownst predestined forming of Unwed Sailor. Not aiming for Unwed Sailor to fall into the regular confines of a typical band, Ford’s ever evolving cast and crew has been tirelessly composed over the years of good friends and company. Throughout the past decade, Unwed Sailor has shared the stage with the likes of Pedro the Lion, Mary Timony, Low, The Danielson Famile, Sufjan Stevens, Early Day Miners, Minus the Bear, The Advantage, The Starlight Mints, Battles, Mates of State, and Beach House(just to name a few....). The band has since been relocated and based out of cities across the United States, including Chicago, Seattle, Washington D.C., Jackson MS, Little Rock, AR, and most recently Lawrence, KS.
