December, 5 2009 08:00 PM - Houston Jones
, Oak Park, California 91377 - $15.00

Back by popular demand! HOUSTON JONES is a high energy roots rock style band featuring Travis Jones (popular blue-eyed Bay Area singer and guitarist, seen in many venues with bands such as Large And In The Way and who has worked closely over the years with leading Bay Area musicians), Glenn Houston (Bammie-Award winning lead guitarist who is also a co-founder of The Waybacks and Hearts On Fire), Chris Kee (a classically trained cellist with a degree in ethnomusicology, Chris is a busy Bay Area bassist, having opened for many a famous act as well as being an original member of The Waybacks), Peter Tucker (percussionist extraordinaire, who has worked with the latest, the greatest and the oldest, from The Monks to The Waybacks and everything in between), and Henry Salvia (who has played keyboards with artists such as Bo Diddley, Rickie Lee Jones, Al Kooper, Johnny Adams and many others). The "High Octane Americana" music of HOUSTON JONES recaptures the infectious energy of the early days of rock n’ roll. The band features top notch original songs from ballads to rockers, energetic instrumentals, and some of the strongest vocals you’ve heard in years. Their music is an original blend of folk, blues, bluegrass, and gospel. What separates Houston Jones from similar bands is the high quality of the songwriting, with great hooks, melodies, and compelling lyrics. And WOW can these guys play!

January, 9 2010 08:00 PM - Alex DePue & Miguel De Hoyos
, Oak Park, California 91377 - $15.00

This duo’s music is a jaw-dropping tour de force of Latin, Classic-Rock and Showtunes designed to bring audience members to their feet. Standing ovations are the norm not the exception. A chance meeting south of the border in the Baja coastal town of La Mision, melded the talents of these two stellar musicians known for their fiery performances. Alex Depue and Miguel De Hoyos have recorded two CDs together that are sure to turn some heads. Rock-N-Roll on the fiddle and guitar featuring "Dust In The Wind" by Kansas, "Stairway To Heaven" by Led Zeppelin, and "All I Ask" from The Phantom Of The Opera to name a few. National Fiddle Champion Alex DePue began taking classical violin lessons at age five. He won his first major competition at age 10, and later (age 16) won a competition that entitled him to perform at Carnegie Hall. He has been ranked among the top 10 fiddlers in the nation at the Grand Masters Fiddling Championship. Miguel De Hoyos is one of the foremost guitarists in all of Mexico. To say that they are amazing together is quite an understatement. We guarantee one of the best shows you’ll see all year! Certainly a GREAT way to start our 2010 series.

February, 20 2010 08:00 PM - The Cache Valley Drifters
, Oak Park, California 91377 - $15.00

What began back in 1972 as a bunch of California hippy kids playing music for the fun of it, the CACHE VALLEY DRIFTERS have been bringing a modern outlook to bluegrass and country music for over three-and-a-half decades. Although they disbanded from 1985 to 1993, a period the band describes as "eight years off for good behavior", the Cache Valley Drifters (pronounced "cash") have been steadily making up for lost time. Their performances are as likely to include bluegrass interpretations of songs by Paul Simon, Etta James and Cream as they are to feature tunes by the late country folk-singer Kate Wolf and traditional fiddle music. CVD’s association with Wolf is natural considering that the band’s longest-standing member, BILL GRIFFIN (mandolin, guitar & vocals), toured for many years as her bass player. MIKE MULLINS (guitar, mandolin & vocals), CVD’s resident songwriter, was invited to join the group in 1993. WALLY BARNICK (bass & vocals), who played with CVD from 1975 to 1979, rejoined the group with their re-formation in 1993. They have shared concert and festival stages with artists such as Doc and Merle Watson, Newgrass Revival, Stephane Grappelli, David Grisman, Alison Krauss, The Allman Brothers, Dave Mason, Little Feat, Willie Nelson, Ricky Nelson, Emmylou, etc. Their July 2001 performance here at Russ & Julie’s House Concerts remains a highlight and we’re thrilled to have them back!

March, 13 2010 08:00 PM - Jude Johnstone and Lori Lieberman
, Oak Park, California 91377 - $15.00

JUDE JOHNSTONE’s songs have been covered by such well known artists as Stevie Nicks ("Cry Wolf"), Bette Midler ("The Girl Is On To You"), Trisha Yearwood ("The Woman Before Me," "Hearts In Armor" and "When We Were Still In Love"), Johnny Cash (the title cut of the Grammy-winning album "Unchained"), Jennifer Warnes ("The Nightingale"), and Bonnie Raitt ("Wounded Heart"). She also won a 1993 BMI Songwriters Award for the song "The Woman Before Me". Jude’s debut collection Coming Of Age, has guest contributions by Trisha Yearwood, Jennifer Warnes, and Bonnie Raitt, as well as by old friends Jackson Browne and Valerie Carter. The album is a rich and diversified collection of songs offering reflective lyrical content and haunting melodies. Her eagerly anticipated new follow-up CD, On A Good Day, includes guest appearances by Jackson Browne, Rodney Crowell, Julie Miller, and Bonnie Raitt. Johnstone’s most recent CDs, Blue Light and Mr. Sun are jazz/blues influenced projects possessing the distinctly sensitive and soulful qualities found in her previous two discs. It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly 4 years since Jude last performed at Russ & Julie’s House Concerts; she’s certainyl one of our most requested "return" artists! LORI LIEBERMAN has remained in the shadows of the spotlight since the early seventies, quietly gleaning the respect of an industry and a devoted base of fans. As the one responsible for such hits as "Killing Me Softly With His Song" she consistently recorded album after album for Capitol Records (5 LPs), RCA, EMI, Pope Music, and currently, Drive On Records. (It was Roberta Flack who heard Lieberman’s own version of "Killing Me Softly" featured on an American Airlines music channel and recorded the now classic version of Lori’s Grammy award winning song.) Throughout the years of ever-changing styles and fads, one thing has remained constant in Lieberman’s music-- her honest and heartfelt lyrics, coupled with her haunting, and beautiful melodies, always cutting right through to the heart of the listener. Lori has performed with John Sebastian, Randy Newman, Billy Joel, Leonard Cohen, John Stewart, and countless others. Her latest release, Gun Metal Sky, is the definitive Lori Lieberman recording. Four years in the making, this CD reflects Lieberman’s growth as a vocalist, writer, producer and arranger. With eight songs penned by Lieberman, it also includes four songs by some of our most beloved songwriters and interpreted by her unique sensitivity and style.
